Stratolaunch, LLC Sr. Director, Advanced Hypersonic Programs in West Lafayette, Indiana

Position Summary

Stratolaunch is a technology accelerator that engineers operationally realistic testing at Mach 5+. Our air-launched, Talon testbeds are reusable, cost-effective platforms that enable routine access to the hypersonic environment. We deliver flight data critical to validating system performance and achieving rapid technology deployment. Together with our customers, we drive innovations that are imperative to advancing national security.

Stratolaunch needs a Sr. Director to lead the Advanced Programs Group. This position is responsible for leading the tactical implementation of the Stratolaunch strategic plan. This group will focus on developing customer offerings based on the Stratolaunch architecture. The offerings are based on existing capabilities and upgrades/modifications/ and/or new designs that meet customer requirements. Candidates must have a strong aerospace conceptual design and program management background, preferably with experience in hypersonic programs. Candidates must also have experience with aerospace vehicle development and test across the speed range from subsonic to hypersonic is highly desired. Finally, candidates must have experience developing new business and providing program and technical leadership to business development efforts.

As a Sr. Director, you will lead a small project team dedicated to shaping and implementing the long term Stratolaunch strategic plan. You will lead a group to develop offerings that meet the requirements of a variety of government and commercial customers. You will lead various conceptual design studies that culminate in proposals to the customer. You will be responsible for developing the technical offering and meeting customer requirements while satisfying customer cost and schedule constraints. It is anticipated you will lead multiple efforts to address capabilities desired by different government and commercial customers. Additionally, you will provide leadership for our partnership with Purdue University developing new design tools for the company. Your group will be the primary interface with various Stratolaunch customers. Position will also provide program leadership for the Stratolaunch company. This position is based in West Lafayette, IN.


  • Lead the Stratolaunch Advanced Design Group to develop customer offerings.

  • Lead the Purdue University Partnership

  • Develop customer offerings that address a variety of customer desired capabilities, including integration of alternate propulsion technologies, use of secondary aircraft, ground launch configurations, and vehicles with increased range and speed

  • Develop the cost and schedule for the Stratolaunch offerings that leads to follow on contracts for the company

  • Contribute to the Stratolaunch strategic roadmap, including identifying technologies for investment

  • Implement program management tools, as needed, to facilitate proposal development

  • Contribute to developing statements of work, establishing program review gates, setting milestones with applicable entry and exit criteria, and evaluating sub-contractor capabilities

  • Responsible for developing requirements based on interactions with hypersonic customers

  • Contribute to development of the hypersonic customer base

  • Develop an understanding of company capabilities and how they align with customer requirements; goal to help prioritize the customers given the company’s constraints

  • Develop material for proposals to a variety of internal and external customers

  • Contribute to the business plan with forecasts of schedule, budget, and personnel

  • Contribute to growth of Stratolaunch team members who can represent the company in customer discussions

  • Evaluate risks and mitigation plans to determine adequacy and effectiveness

  • Provide mentorship and independent review to the current Stratolaunch programs of record, as requested

  • Regular and comprehensive communication to the Chief Operating Officer on a weekly and monthly basis

  • Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems

  • Travel, as appropriate, to support the company

  • Experience with high-speed, e.g. supersonic or hypersonic, aerospace systems

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: large aerospace program management, sub-contracts and procurement, personnel management, aircraft systems, aircraft operations, launch vehicle integration, ground systems

  • Experience with conceptual design, including providing adequate margin to the technical performance, and cost and schedule estimates

  • Experience developing a customer base and responding to customer requirements

  • Experience working with government and commercial customers

  • Experience with technical aerospace leadership, including working with sub-contractors

  • Experience with risk management

  • Facilitation skills and ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to gain support or resolve concerns

  • Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals

  • Complex aerospace system development experience

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance at the TS/SCI level.


  • Launch vehicle and/or aircraft integration experience

  • Large transport category or military aircraft operations experience

  • Experience with government agencies (customers and regulatory)

  • Experience with air-launch programs

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification

  • Active security clearance at the TS/SCI level

Required computer skills

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • MS Project

  • Project management tools


  • Master’s degree (M.A. or M.S.) from accredited institution and 20-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates with a Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) will be most competitive.
