Stratolaunch Propulsion Design Engineer in Seattle, Washington

Stratolaunch, founded in 2011 by Paul G. Allen, is developing an air-launch platform to make access to space more convenient, reliable, and routine. We believe that normalizing access to low Earth orbit (LEO) has the potential to redefine our lives by creating more opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology from space.

To achieve these great efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Propulsion Design Engineer to assist the VP of Propulsion Engineering in leading engineering efforts and contractor efforts within the Propulsion Engineering department in direct support of Propulsion development efforts.

As a Propulsion Design Engineer, you will be responsible for working directly with the VP of Propulsion to develop engine component hardware and engine systems. You are also responsible for working with all aspects of the engineering teams and their associated projects, including various aspects of the design, development, fabrication, and testing for engine development. Candidates must have an experienced aerospace development background, relevant experience in propulsion systems development, have detailed technical experience and knowledge of additive manufacturing, valve development, team leadership experience, and project management experience.

Essential duties and responsibilities :

  • Provide technical design support andleadership for specific projects within the engine developmentprogram with focus on design and analysis of engine components and engine systems

  • Expert in providing design support with CAD models and drawing deliverables

  • Regular and comprehensive communication to the Vice President of Propulsion Engineering on a regular basis

  • Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems

  • Travel, as needed, to support the VP and/or the department

  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: design engineering (CAD) , project management , team leadership, engine development, engine component development, launch vehicle integration

  • Experience with technical aerospace leadership; including working with sub-contractors

  • Extensive experience with various CAD/CAM packages

  • Experience with interface management

  • Facilitation skills and ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to gain support or resolve concerns

  • Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals

  • Complex aerospace system development

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities


  • Pro-E / Creo Experience

  • Windchill Experience

  • Launch vehicle development experience

  • Rocket engine development experience

  • Experience with government agencies

  • Experience with air-launch programs

  • Security clearance

Required computer skills

  • Engineering software tools

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • MS Project or relevant scheduling program

  • Configuration management systems

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering from accredited institution and 5-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration

Special remarks regarding work environment

  • Travel estimated to be approximately 25+%

  • Position is based in either Seattle, WA or Huntsville, AL
