Stratolaunch, LLC Controller in Seattle, Washington

Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high-speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic, and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.

Stratolaunch is seeking a Controller in our Seattle office to build our accounting function from the ground up. The Controller will be responsible for all accounting aspects of Stratolaunch and must ensure compliance with all Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and requirements relating to government contracts. A successful candidate will direct and coordinate the activities of accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and other functions of the department. The incumbent also applies principles of accounting to analyze financial information, prepare financial reports, and complete tax reporting requirements.


  • Accounting department leadership and creation of accounting policies and procedures

  • Conduct training on newly established processes for adherence of new practices by the organization

  • Ensure that effective internal controls are in place to ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.

  • Manage the cash flow planning process and ensure funds availability. Oversee the A/P function, approve payables, authorize large wires and ACHs. Supervise the A/R function and provide guidance relating to the collection process.

  • Oversee the month-end close process, constantly reviewing procedures while eliminating inefficiencies.

  • Take hands-on lead position of developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive job cost system.

  • Ownership of all general ledger accounts and accountability for their periodic audit and accuracy

  • Establish credibility throughout the organization as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges. Co-ordinate with other departments and make suggestions for automating processes and increasing working efficiency. Identification and implementation of process and communications improvements

  • Compilation and submission of monthly, quarterly, and annual taxes.

  • Review and/or execution of biweekly, in-house, multistate payroll

  • Mentoring accounting team for personal development and growth

  • Recommends prudent measures to reduce costs and/or increase revenues


  • Strong background in product cost Accounting (standard cost system) and experience in plant accounting/finance systems including strong understanding in the use of Excel.

  • GAAP knowledge is required. Track record of improving internal controls highly valued.

  • Exceptional analytical abilities and understanding of accounting and finance issues

  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections. Working knowledge of short and long term budgeting and forecasting, rolling budgets, and profitability and variance analysis.

  • A proactive, hands-on strategic thinker with solid problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation vs. simple reporting.

  • Experience presenting to highest levels of management with confidence and precision.

  • Solid, overall business acumen and a strong mindset for continuous improvement.

  • Attention to detail and an attitude of 100% compliance with all company and regulatory requirements

  • Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects


  • 10+ years Accounting/Finance experience

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in accounting

  • Background in Public Accounting a plus. MBA and/or CPA highly desirable

  • Experience with Deltek Professional Services

  • Significant experience working with external auditors, internal controls and compliance-related issues.

  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation

  • Knowledge of federal, Washington, and California payroll laws

  • This position is located in Seattle, WA

  • Regular travel required to Mojave Spaceport, and other domestic locations
