Stratolaunch, LLC Vehicle Management System Lead in Mojave, California
Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development.
The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise.
Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.
To achieve these efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Principal Avionics Engineer to lead the Vehicle Management System developmen t for the high speed vehicle.
This position will lead the design, development, and integration of the Vehicle Management System with the vehicle flight software, flight computer, effectors and vehicle sensors. This includes developing and owning the Vehicle Management System requirements.
This position will provide leadership for the integration of the vehicle management system with the flight controls and avionics hardware teams. This position will be responsible for integrating the sensor inputs with the flight software and ensuring vehicle commands reach the end effectors.
Additionally, this position will lead the integration of the vehicle health monitoring system with the flight computer, contributing to the failure detection scheme and ultimately the flight safety and flight termination system activation.
Finally, this position will lead the planning effort for the verification and validation of the vehicle management system in a hardware environment.
You must be comfortable with component/system development and integration. This position will include evaluation of a broad range of technical data.
Candidates must have an aerospace development background and relevant experience in aerospace systems integration.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Lead the development and implementation of the vehicle management system for the high speed Stratolaunch vehicle
Lead the integration of the vehicle management system with the vehicle flight software and avionics hardware
Provide leadership to the flight controls and flight software teams, including personnel management and schedule development
Develop and own the vehicle management system requirements
Lead the vehicle management system interfaces to the high speed vehicle end effectors
Integrate the vehicle health monitoring system, including the integration and activation of the flight safety and flight termination systems
Lead the planning for the verification and validation of the vehicle management system
Contribute to aerospace systems integration with interface development
Develop engineering tools, as needed, to complete their tasking.
Evaluate risks and risk mitigation plans to determine if the risks are appropriate and risk mitigations are adequate
Regular and comprehensive communication to the Hypersonic Chief Engineer on a weekly and monthly basis
Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems
Travel, as needed, to support the department

Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: Avionics, electrical engineering, Flight software, control theory, flight algorithm development, Avionics hardware development, aircraft and/or launch vehicle integration
Experience with aircraft prototype development, including releasing Engineering definition and developing work instructions
Experience with aircraft prototype integration and testing
Experience with technical aerospace leadership, including working with sub-contractors
Experience with test planning and execution
Experience with risk management
Ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to explain rationale and/or resolve concerns
Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals
Complex aerospace system development
Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 10-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Travel estimated to be approximately 5+%
