Stratolaunch, LLC Systems Safety Engineer in Mojave, California
Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.
To achieve these great efforts, Stratolaunch needs a System Safety Engineer to evaluate the hazards and safety of the Stratolaunch architecture. This position will work with our Engineering and Operations team for both the carrier aircraft and payload development. This position will be based at our facility in Mojave, CA.
In this role, the selected candidate will lead the refinement and implementation of Stratolaunch’s system safety processes. In addition, core responsibilities will include contributing to the design and development of aerospace vehicles and processes from a safety perspective, documenting various system safety analyses, building and maintaining Stratolaunch’s Hazard Database, and assisting with safety-related requirements management. This candidate must be comfortable working in a flight test environment. This position directly reports to our Chief Executive Officer. Candidates must have a strong engineering education background, a desire to work in aviation and aerospace safety, and excellent writing skills.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Develop the Stratolaunch System Safety Analysis
Review and monitor all Safety Derived Requirements
Participate in the risk management process for Stratolaunch
Responsible for mission assurance for Stratolaunch customers
Responsible for the Stratolaunch quality function
Serve in the Safety role for change management
Review and update safety-related portions of all documentation
Document risks and risk mitigation plans, and track risk changes over time
Analyze technical data with interpretation for application to safety assessments
Conduct safety evaluations of test set-ups, procedures, and the test itself
Communicate regularly/comprehensively to the Chief Executive Officer
Travel, as needed, to support the department

Strong communication skills
Strong knowledge of aerospace safety processes, including Ec analysis, hazards analysis, FMEAs, critical items list, and operational procedures evaluation
Experience with AS9100 or similar quality standards
Excellent attention to detail
Familiarity with requirements development
Familiarity with risk management
Facilitation skills and ability to communicate effectively to varied audiences to gain support or resolve concerns
Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals
Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities
Excellent knowledge of fundamental aerospace safety processes, skilled at creating fault trees, functional hazard analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, probabilistic risk analysis, reliability, and system safety analysis
Knowledge of statistics and basic reliability theory
Required computer skills
- MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio)
Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in engineering field from accredited institution
15 years of experience in aerospace system safety fields
