Stratolaunch, LLC Staff Structural Design Engineer in Mojave, California
Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch test platform to contribute to high-speed research and development.
The goal of Stratolaunch is to utilize the capabilities of the Stratolaunch Carrier Aircraft and air-launch test vehicles to enable development of technologies that may not exist otherwise.
Stratolaunch strives to create technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic, and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.
To achieve these great efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Staff Structural Design Engineer participate in the development of a hypersonic flight vehicle. This position also includes development and implementation of other segments of the Stratolaunch architecture, which could include airborne support equipment, launch vehicle, and ground elements.
As a Staff Structural Design Engineer , you are responsible for contributing to the conceptual and detailed design of the high speed vehicle primary structure, aero shell, and supporting structure.
Once the overall vehicle structural concept is defined, you will then lead the detailed design of a portion of the vehicle structure. As a Staff Structural Design Engineer , you are responsible for contributing to the vehicle’s structural technical performance, including meeting design and mission requirements, resolving technical challenges, and implementing technology upgrades that improve the competitive basis of the Stratolaunch architecture.
The role will also support, on an as-needed basis, the continued development of the carrier aircraft.
This position is based in Mojave, CA.
Candidates must have strong aircraft development and operational background, facilities experience, and relevant experience in aircraft systems integration.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Participate in and/or lead portions of the structural development of the high speed vehicle
Perform detailed design of various structural components, leading to release of Engineering definition and work orders
Design various secondary/support structure for mounting components in the high speed vehicle
Select material systems and construction techniques that meet project objectives
Evaluate vehicle loads and environments; contribute to assigning these loads and environments to various zones around the high speed vehicle
Resolve technical challenges, as they arise, for the high speed vehicle and its integration with the carrier aircraft
Contribute to risk evaluations for Air Launch programs
Evaluate risks and develop risk mitigation plans for Structures
Regular and comprehensive communication to project leads
Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems
Travel, as needed, to support the company

Strong fundamental structures background, including the ability to hand size structural components
Experience with bonded and wet tied composite structure
Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: loads, mechanical systems, aircraft systems, aircraft operations, static testing
Experience with technical aerospace leadership, including working with sub-contractors
Experience with risk management
Facilitation skills and ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to present technical solutions and resolve questions
Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals
Complex aerospace system development
Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities
Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from an accredited institution and 7-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience with high speed aircraft
Experience with external stores
Experience with government agencies
Experience with air-launch programs

Finite element modeling and tools
MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
