Stratolaunch, LLC Staff Software Engineer in Mojave, California

Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch test platform to contribute to high-speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to utilize the capabilities of the Stratolaunch Carrier Aircraft and air-launch test vehicles to enable development of technologies that may not exist otherwise.

Stratolaunch strives to create technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic, and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.

To achieve these great efforts, Stratolaunch is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to develop and test flight software on an autonomous rocket-powered air-launch vehicle. This position also includes software development and implementation of other segments of the Stratolaunch architecture, which could include hardware-in-the-loop, ground support equipment, and other software/hardware test.

You are responsible for the design, development, meeting requirements, performing verification activities, and test execution for software projects. You must be comfortable with component/system development and integration.

This position will include evaluation of a broad range of technical data. Candidates must have an aerospace development background and relevant experience in aerospace systems integration.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop and test new flight software architectures in support of advanced rocket-powered air-launch vehicle systems

  • Develop software throughout the stack from high level test software to embedded flight code

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand challenges and develop software requirements and solutions

  • Perform test procedure development and test execution

  • Perform requirement verification activities

  • Contribute to hardware integration with the development of interface documents

  • Support various lab/bench hardware tests with custom software

  • Support integration of the air-launch vehicle systems with the carrier aircraft

  • Perform design and/or analysis to support component development

  • Provide technical guidance for projects within the larger program

  • Evaluate risks and contribute to risk mitigation plans to determine if the risks are appropriate and risk mitigation are adequate

  • Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems

  • Travel, as needed, to support projects

  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments

Required:

  • Knowledge of and experience with embedded software engineering and one or more of these disciplines: avionics, electronics, aircraft and/or launch vehicle integration

  • Experience with developing and testing real-time deterministic mission-critical embedded systems

  • Experience with requirements development, with a focus on interface management

  • Excellent written communication and software documentation skills

  • Experience with risk management

  • Ability to communicate technical challenges and provide interface guidance to varied audiences to develop airborne and ground support systems. Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals

  • Experience with serial communications, software test, and computer networking

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities

Preferred:

  • Air-launch vehicle software development experience

  • Experience with flight computer and/or vehicle management computer software development, test, and integration

  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop software development, test, and integration

  • Experience with safety-critical software development Experience with government agencies

  • Experience with Agile Software Development methodologies

  • Experience with work management tools such as JIRA

  • Automated testing experience

  • Experience in Java, LabVIEW, Matlab/Simulink

  • Security clearance

Required:

  • Strong software development skills, particularly in C/C++, Python

  • Linux OR other RTOS (Xenomai, VxWorks, INTEGRITY, Deos, LynxOS, etc.)

  • Knowledge of communication standards and protocols RS422, UDP/TCP

  • Source control tools, Git, SVN, etc.

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Engineering software tools

  • Education/experience/certifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 8-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special remarks regarding work environment

  • This position is located in Mojave, CA

  • Some travel (<10%) may be required
