Stratolaunch, LLC Sr. TPS Materials and Process Engineer in Mojave, California
Position Summary
Stratolaunch is developing hypersonic vehicles to support various Department of Defense and commercial applications. We are seeking a Thermal Protection System Materials and Process Engineer to contribute to the development and integration of high-temperature materials and processes. Candidates must have a strong Thermal Protection System background, with experience in hypersonic development, and/or test. Experience with aerospace vehicle design and Thermal Protection System design and manufacturing is highly desired.
As a TPS M&P Engineer , you will contribute to the development of upgrades to the Stratolaunch Thermal Protection System, enabling increased performance of the Stratolaunch hypersonic vehicles. You will evaluate candidate TPS materials, develop the technical roadmap for incorporation, identify sub-contractors, when needed, and consider making investments in both internal and external TPS capability. You will support design and analysis, and provide recommendations for upgrading the Stratolaunch TPS materials. Additionally, you may contribute to conceptual design trade studies by identifying TPS materials for use on Stratolaunch hypersonic vehicle designs.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Develop requirements for TPS materials and optimize the requirements based on material availability and Stratolaunch hypersonic vehicle performance
Identify candidate TPS materials and determine the path to implement these materials on Stratolaunch vehicles
Create and maintain the TPS mechanical material properties database for use in structural and thermal analyses
Create and maintain the processing specs to install the Thermal Protection System onto Stratolaunch hypersonic vehicles
Create test plans, procedures, and reports to support the development and integration of TPS materials
Identify and manage sub-contractors to partner with for TPS material upgrades
Contribute to identification of business opportunities that enable Stratolaunch to invest in high temperature material development
Contribute to conceptual design trade studies by identifying TPS materials for use on Stratolaunch hypersonic vehicle designs
Contribute to TPS design and analysis tool development, as required
Help resolve technical challenges, as required
Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems
Support the preparation of business proposals to the US Government and industry
Travel, as needed, to support the company

Required
Knowledge of, and experience with Thermal Protection System materials and integration, structural design, and aircraft/aerospace vehicle design
Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) tools
Experience with TPS materials thermal and mechanical properties and the tests necessary to characterize/qualify them
Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals
Complex aerospace system development
Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities
Ability to obtain a security clearance at the TS/SCI level
Preferred
Experience with hypersonic vehicle development and/or test
Experience with TPS materials manufacturing
Active security clearance
Required computer skills
MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Relevant TPS design and analysis tools
Education/experience/certifications
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) in engineering, physics, or mathematics from an accredited institution and 5-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
