Stratolaunch, LLC Sr. RF Engineering Technician in Mojave, California

Position Summary

Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high-speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic, and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.

To achieve these efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Senior RF Technician to develop the ground-based mission critical RF communication systems for its carrier aircraft and hypersonic vehicle. This position will also lead the effort to integrate and test those systems. Additionally, this position will include collaborating with other system owners to understand requirements and engineer solutions. You must be comfortable with component/system development and integration. This position will include evaluation of a broad range of technical data. Candidates must have an aerospace development background and relevant experience in aerospace systems integration.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead the integrated ground-segment telemetry hardware integration effort

  • Integrate and test mission critical ground-segment RF systems for the hypersonic vehicle

  • Integrate and test mission critical ground-segment RF systems for the carrier aircraft

  • Develop test plans for the ground-segment telemetry systems

  • Collaborate with engineers across a broad spectrum of disciplines to understand requirements and engineer solutions

  • Contribute to flight test planning for integrated (carrier aircraft + pylon + hypersonic vehicle) Stratolaunch missions

  • Contribute to coordination of range testingas appropriate for TM, etc.

  • Support flight tests in the Mission Control Center as a telemetry specialist

  • Support design reviews throughout vehicle development

  • Regular and comprehensive communication to the Data Network Lead on a weekly basis

  • Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems

  • Travel, as needed, to support the hardware integration and flight test efforts at various ranges

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: RF engineering, electrical engineering, avionics, software engineering, aircraft and/or launch vehicle integration

  • Knowledge of RF system design including link budgets, antenna placement,RF Frequency Integration, RF compatibility, EMC/EMI

  • Knowledge of telemetry standards such as IRIG-106 (Chapter 4, Chapter 7, Chapter 10)

  • Experience integrating RF-system hardware into a larger architecture

  • Experience writing and executing RF-related test plans and procedures

  • Experience releasing definition and developing work instructions

  • Experience working with flight-test ranges

  • Experience with risk management

  • Desire to work hands-on throughout the RF system lifecycle

  • Ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to explain rationale and/or resolve concerns

  • Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities

Required Computer Skills

  • RF-system monitoring tools

  • Computer Aided Design tools

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Configuration management systems


  • Experience with Symvionics IADs

  • Experience with IRIG-106 Chapter 4, Chapter 7, and Chapter 10

  • Experience with ethernet-over-telemetry communication protocols

  • Experience programming or configuring RF-system hardware

  • Experience controlling ground-segment RF systems to support flight-test

  • Experience performing RF-system tests such as BERT

  • Experience with FCC licensing

  • Experience with government agencies

  • Experience with air-launch programs

  • Security clearance


  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 5-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Remarks

  • Travel estimated to be <20%

  • Position is based in Mojave, CA
