Stratolaunch, LLC Sr. Propulsion Avionics Integration Engineer in Mojave, California

Position Summary

Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.

To achieve these great efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Senior Propulsion Avionics Integration Engineer to support the development and integration of a liquid rocket engine into the Talon-A vehicle. This position may include the engine electrical integration, engine controller software integration, and modifications to the flight computer software to support rocket engine integration into the Talon-A vehicle.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop custom hardware and software solutions to integrate a liquid rocket engine into the Talon-A vehicle including electrical power, instrumentation, and engine software modifications

  • Liaison with the rocket engine manufacturer to communicate requirements and develop interfaces between the engine and Talon-A vehicle

  • Support rocket engine integration into the Talon-A vehicle and the propulsion test stand

  • Design and layout custom printed circuit boards

  • Perform design and/or analysis to support component development

  • Perform test verification activities on the bench and on Talon-A

  • Perform test procedure development and test execution

  • Support pre- and post-flight test activities

  • Develop engineering tools, as needed, to complete tasking

  • Analyze test data for various projects

  • Evaluate risks and contribute to risk mitigation plans to determine if the risks are appropriate and risk mitigations are adequate

  • Regular and comprehensive communication to the Talon-A Propulsion Lead on a weekly and monthly basis

  • Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems

  • Travel, as needed, to support projects

  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments

Required

  • Knowledge of and experience with one or more of these disciplines: liquid rocket engine integration, electrical engineering, avionics, electronics, software, aircraft and/or launch vehicle integration

  • Experience with requirements development, with a focus on interface management

  • Excellent written communication and documentation skills

  • Experience with risk management

  • Ability to communicate technical challenges and provide interface guidance to varied audiences to develop airborne and ground support systems. Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals

  • Complex aerospace system development

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities

  • Experience with air or space vehicle instrumentation

Preferred

  • Liquid rocket engine integration experience

  • Aircraft and/or launch vehicle development experience

  • Software development and support experience

  • Experience with government agencies

  • Experience with air-launch programs

  • Automated testing experience

  • Security clearance

Required Computer Skills

  • Experience in C/C++, Python, XML

  • Experience with UDP/TCP and PCM

  • Experience with PCB design software

  • Engineering software tools

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Configuration management systems

Education/experience/certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 5-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Remarks

  • Travel estimated to be approximately <5%

  • Position is based in Mojave, CA
