Stratolaunch, LLC Sr. Mechanical Systems Engineer in Mojave, California
Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.
To achieve these great efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Sr. Mechanical Systems Engineer to lead the completion of the carrier aircraft hydraulic system. This candidate must also integrate with the system with various other areas, such as landing gear and the landing gear doors.
As a Sr. Mechanical Systems Engineer, you will lead the completion of the hydraulics system for the carrier aircraft. Your primary responsibility is responsibility for the hydraulic system performance of the carrier aircraft and working with other carrier aircraft engineers on the integration of the hydraulic system with their sub-systems. As the responsible engineer, you must also develop test plans, help execute verification testing, and contribute to the integrated flight test planning for the Stratolaunch architecture. You are also responsible for helping to meet the technical performance of the Stratolaunch architecture, including meeting design and mission requirements, resolving technical challenges, and evaluating technology upgrades that improve the competitive basis of the Stratolaunch architecture. This position is based in Mojave, CA. Candidates must have strong Mechanical Systems background, with experience in experimental aircraft development, and relevant experience in aircraft systems integration.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Responsible for all aspects of the carrier aircraft hydraulic system, including interfaces and test planning
Complete the design of the hydraulic system to support landing gear and the landing gear door modifications for the carrier aircraft
Assess the ground support architecture for hydraulics and determine if the current architecture is the best path forward
Help resolve technical challenges, as they arise, for the carrier aircraft hydraulic system
Path to contributing and/or leading other system areas of the Stratolaunch architecture, such as structures, fluids, electrical and/or Avionics
Contribute to the flight test team by participating in the control room
Contribute to risk evaluations for Air Launch programs
Evaluate risks and risk mitigation plans to determine if the risks are appropriate and risk mitigations are adequate
Regular and comprehensive communication to the department lead on a weekly and monthly basis
Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems
Travel, as needed, to support the company
Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments

Required
Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: mechanical systems, hydraulics structures, loads, aircraft systems, aircraft operations, ground systems
Experience with technical aerospace leadership, including working with sub-contractors
Experience with risk management
Facilitation skills and ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to present technical solutions and resolve questions
Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals
Complex aerospace system development
Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities

Experience with large transport aircraft
Experience with high speed aircraft
Finite element modeling
Experience with external stores
Experience with government agencies

Education/experience/certifications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from an accredited institution and/or 5-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
