Stratolaunch, LLC Sr. Mechanical Engineer in Mojave, California
Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.
To achieve these efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Senior Mechanical Engineer to develop electro-mechanical flight control systems. Tasking may include both flight and ground hardware. An ideal candidate will have mechanical and electrical design experience with aerospace flight hardware. You must be comfortable with supporting your design through the entire design life cycle – from conceptual through integration and test. This position will include evaluation of a broad range of technical data.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Lead the design, build, and component level testing of electro-mechanical systems and hardware, including electro-mechanical actuators, controllers, sensors, and batteries
Spec the requirements and performance of components and integrated electro-mechanical systems
Perform structural and thermal analysis of mechanical components and/or assemblies
Lead the environmental testing of components and assemblies, including vehicle-level integrated testing
Create component and assembly drawings, as required
Assist mechanics in integrating all components and assemblies onto the vehicle
Develop engineering tools, as needed, to complete their tasking
Regular and comprehensive communication to your lead
Travel, as needed, to support the department

Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: electro-mechanical systems, mechanical design, structural engineering, thermal analysis, kinematics, component or assembly level environmental testing, electrical and/or instrumentation experience
Experience with electro-mechanical actuators, controllers, sensors, and batteries
Experience with ground test hardware, including releasing engineering definition and developing work instructions
Experience with metal component design, both billet machined components and weldments
Experience with component-level or subsystem level test planning and execution
Ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to explainrationale and/or resolve concerns
Ability to work on their own initiative
Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities
Required Computer Skills
Computer Aided Design tools – Solidworks or CATIA V5
MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Experience interfacing with composite structures
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 5-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Travel estimated to be approximately <5%
