Stratolaunch, LLC Senior Guidance and Navigation Engineer in Mojave, California
Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.
To achieve these efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Senior Guidance and Navigation Engineer to lead the design, development, and integration of the Avionics and Software teams for the Stratolaunch high speed vehicle. This position will be responsible for analyzing, contributing to development, and integrating the flight guidance algorithms and software on to the Avionics platform. These efforts will include a focus on how to perform state estimation for the flight algorithms and software while working with the sub-contractor team. Additionally, this candidate will lead the efforts for flight reconstruction of the high speed research, with a specific focus on state estimation and responsibility for providing the vehicle state and configuration to the rest of the team. This position will also contribute to the planning efforts for verifying and validating the flight software in a hardware environment. You must be comfortable with component/system development and integration. This position will include evaluation of a broad range of technical data. Candidates must have an aerospace development background and relevant experience in aerospace systems integration.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Interpret mission definition to create relevant guidance and navigation requirements
Develop guidance architecture and algorithm for the Hypersonic mission profile
Develop navigation architecture and algorithm for the Hypersonic mission profile
Develop analysis and design tools to support guidance and navigation algorithm development
Lead the state estimation development for the Stratolaunch high-speed vehicle throughout the Mach regime, including landing, transonic, and other high speed regimes
Lead the state estimation development for flight reconstruction
Develop internal tools to determine the vehicle state and configuration
Provide the vehicle state analysis to the rest of the Stratolaunch team to analyze for their flight data evaluations
Evaluate the development and implementation of the flight control laws to the Stratolaunch high speed vehicle
Perform sensitivity analysis, as required, to different flight profiles in the Stratolaunch computing environment
Contribute to the planning for the verification and validation of the flight algorithms
Lead the preparation of the internal team for transitioning to leadership responsibilities for modifying and upgrading the flight control algorithms and software
Develop and implement the plan for transitioning leadership of the flight software to Stratolaunch
Goal to lead the software modifications for the second high speed flight and all flights thereafter
Contribute to aerospace systems integration with interface development
Develop engineering tools, as needed, to complete their tasking.
Evaluate risks and risk mitigation plans to determine if the risks are appropriate and risk mitigations are adequate
Regular and comprehensive communication to the Vehicle Management System Lead on a weekly and monthly basis
Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems
Travel, as needed, to support the department

Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: Flight software, state estimation, controls, GNC algorithm development, Avionics hardware development, electrical engineering, aircraft and/or launch vehicle integration
Experience with aircraft prototype development, including releasing Engineering definition and developing work instructions
Experience with aircraft prototype integration and testing
Experience with technical aerospace leadership, including working with sub-contractors
Experience with test planning and execution

Ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to explain rationale and/or resolve concerns
Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals
Complex aerospace system development
Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret or Top Secret Clearance within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs.

- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 20-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Travel estimated to be approximately 5+%
