Stratolaunch, LLC Senior Avionics Engineer - Carrier Aircraft in Mojave, California

Position Summary

Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.

To achieve these great efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Senior Avionics Engineer to support development of the Carrier Aircraft Avionics and Instrumentation Systems, as well as participate in the top level system architecture development of the wholistic air launch system. Beyond the duties described below there exists potential to support additional systems and continue to build responsibility.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead the Talon Support System integration within the pylon and Carrier Aircraft

  • A central point of contact for the detailed integration of electrical and avionics components

  • Manage and compile requirements and interface documents

  • Manage and assist in the creation of detailed wire diagrams and schematics

  • Coordination between carrier aircraft and launch vehicle teams to ensure configuration meets needs

  • Generation of Installation and Build Definition

  • Shop/Manufacturing Support and Guidance

  • Lead Carrier Comms/TM/Datalinks

  • Telemetry (aircraft side, ground side, or both) including requirements, procurement, installation, validation, and continued support

  • Coordination between carrier aircraft and launch vehicle teams to ensure configuration meets needs

  • Satcom – test, ops, and continued support

  • RF systems – test, ops, range coordination

  • Likely will involve Control Room and Test/Flight-test support

  • Support RF/TM Camera System including long term upgrade path

  • Support the existing Carrier Aircraft avionics system including test support

  • Regular and comprehensive communication to the Stratolaunch Avionics lead on a weekly and monthly basis

  • Travel, as needed, to support projects

  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments

Required

  • Knowledge of and experience with one or more of these disciplines: electrical engineering, avionics, electronics, software, aircraft and/or launch vehicle integration

  • Experience with requirements development, with a focus on interface management

  • Excellent written communication and documentation skills

  • Experience with risk management

  • Ability to communicate technical challenges and provide interface guidance to varied audiences to develop airborne and ground support systems. Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals

  • Complex aerospace system development

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities

  • Circuit design experience

Preferred

  • Aircraft and/or launch vehicle development experience

  • Software development and support experience

  • Experience with government agencies

  • Experience with air-launch programs

  • Automated testing experience

  • Security clearance

Required Computer Skills

  • Engineering software tools

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Configuration management systems

Education/experience/certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 7-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Remarks

  • Travel estimated to be approximately 10+%

  • Position is based in Mojave, CA
