Stratolaunch seeks a Principal Hypersonic Flight Sciences Engineer to support the conceptual design, aerodynamic analysis, and flight test of hypersonic vehicles. Candidates must have a strong hypersonic aerodynamics background. Experience with aerospace vehicle design, aerodynamic analysis, wind tunnel testing, and flight test across the speed range from subsonic to hypersonic is required.

In this role you will lead a small vertically-integrated aerodynamic design team, where you will lead the aerodynamic design of current and future Stratolaunch hypersonic vehicles. Your tasking may include conceptual design trade studies, tasking the team with detail design tasks, determining which analytical tools are appropriate for the task, leading the aerodynamic ground and flight test approach, and evaluating the aerodynamic risks for the program.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Own the aerodynamic configuration of the Talon-A vehicle and follow-on projects

  • Determine the appropriate analysis methods and tools to be used by the Flight Sciences team across all areas: CFD, store separation dynamics, vehicle performance, stability and control, etc.

  • Provide direction on the appropriate methods to create a high-fidelity aerodynamic model for the vehicle and the aerodynamic uncertainties that should be used

  • Lead the team to estimate vehicle performance through trajectory analysis and optimization

  • Lead the team in the aerodynamic ground and flight test approach, providing recommendations for wind tunnel testing and flight test approaches

  • Provide technical direction and mentoring to the Flight Sciences team

  • Work with other subsystem leads on the program to resolve detail design conflicts that converge with the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle
