Position Summary

Stratolaunch is developing air-launch platforms to contribute to high-speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not otherwise exist. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic, and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.

To achieve these efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Mechanical Engineer II to design, integrate, test, and maintain mechanical systems for prototype high-speed aircraft. Areas of focus may include landing gear, flight controls, primary and secondary structure, propulsion, etc. Tasking may include both flight and ground hardware. An ideal candidate will have mechanical design experience with aerospace flight hardware. You must be comfortable with supporting your design through the entire design life cycle – from conceptual through integration and test. This position will include evaluation of a broad range of technical data. Candidates must have an aerospace development background and relevant experience in aerospace systems integration.

Essential Responsibilities

• Lead the design, build, and component level testing of mechanical systems and hardware

• Perform structural and thermal analysis of mechanical components and/or assemblies

• Spec and order hardware, as required, to fabricate your designs

• Create component and assembly drawings for all hardware

• Assist mechanics in integrating all components and assemblies onto the vehicle

• Test components and/or assemblies to prepare for integrated ground testing

• Develop engineering tools, as needed, to complete their tasking

• Regular and comprehensive communication to your lead

• Travel, as needed, to support the department

• Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments

Qualifications

• Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: mechanical design, structural engineering, thermal analysis, kinematics, component or assembly level mechanical testing, electrical and/or instrumentation experience

• Experience with ground test hardware, including releasing engineering definition and developing work instructions

• Experience with metal component design, both billet machined components and weldments

• Experience with component-level or subsystem level test planning and execution

• Experience with aerospace-grade hardware and mechanical design best practices

• Computer Aided Design tools – Siemens NX (preferred) or Solidworks

• MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

• Ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to explainrationale and/or resolve concerns

• Ability to work on their own initiative

• Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities

• Position is based in Mojave, CA

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 2-plus years of engineering experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience
