Stratolaunch, LLC Mechanical Design Engineer in Mojave, California
To achieve these great efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Mechanical Design Engineer to contribute to the carrier aircraft design, development, and flight test program through its integrated ground and flight test series. Additionally, this position will be part of a test team that is responsible for characterizing and validating system performance and safety.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer , you will be the lead for significant portions of one or more mechanical subsystems (e.g. flight controls) on the carrier aircraft, and will be responsible for integrated testing of the carrier aircraft and provide test input for all design/safety decisions and aircraft test planning. Additionally, this position requires building a test team for Stratolaunch, including hiring personnel, developing and implementing test standards and test training programs, leading the test procedure development for carrier aircraft testing, participating in test card reviews, contribute to planning and participate in simulator evaluations, and providing leadership for the carrier aircraft team as the program progresses through flight envelope expansion and preparing for launch vehicle integration. You will also be asked to participate in various Stratolaunch customer meetings. This position is based in Mojave, CA. Candidates must have strong leadership experience in a flight test organization, and extensive operational background in aircraft operations.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Lead the design and integration activity for significant portions of one or more mechanical systems on the carrier aircraft (e.g. flight controls)
Contribute to the carrier aircraft flight test team for the Stratolaunch Systems Company
Help transition the responsibilities and knowledge for the carrier aircraft flight controls to another team member
Contribute to developing the carrier aircraft flight test goals and flight test planning
Participate, when requested, in design reviews for the Stratolaunch launch systems (e.g. Hyper-A) under development
Contribute to technology upgrade planning for the carrier aircraft and helping evolve the plan from development to operations
Help resolve technical challenges, as they arise, for the carrier aircraft
Evaluate risks and risk mitigation plans to determine if the risks are appropriate and risk mitigations are adequate
Regular and comprehensive communication to the Flight Test lead on a weekly and monthly basis
Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems
Travel, as needed, to support the company

Experience leading a flight test organization, with direct responsibility for flight operations, mission control console operators qualification and training, flight safety and compliance with standards.
Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: large aerospace program technical development, structures, loads, mechanical systems, fluids, aircraft systems, aircraft operations, launch vehicle integration, ground systems
Significant engineering test experience in developmental programs, to include flight envelope expansion
Flight test experience with experimental aircraft
Leadership experience in high-visibility aerospace programs, including technical and operational aspects and working with sub-contractors
Facilitation skills and ability to communicate challenges and guidance to varied audiences to gain support or resolve concerns
Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals
Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities
Mechanical systems design for large transport aircraft
Mechanical systems design for high speed aircraft
Mechanical systems integration and test
Experience with air-launch programs
Required computer skills
CAD Software ( CATIA, SolidWorks, or equivalent)
MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from an accredited institution and 7-plus years of relevant experience.
