Stratolaunch, LLC Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Hardware Engineer in Mojave, California

Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch test platform to contribute to high-speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to utilize the capabilities of the Stratolaunch Carrier Aircraft and air-launch test vehicles to enable development of technologies that may not exist otherwise.

Stratolaunch strives to create technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic, and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.

To achieve these great efforts, Stratolaunch is seeking a HIL Hardware Engineer to develop and maintain a HIL facility for an autonomous rocket-powered air-launch vehicle development program. This engineer will lead the design and deployment of the HIL hardware and collaborate with the GNC Lead Integration Engineer in formulation of the hardware requirements and development plans.

This position will include evaluation of a broad range of technical data. Candidates must have an aerospace development background and relevant experience in aerospace systems integration.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive HIL hardware architecture

  • Provision space, lighting and power for the HIL

  • Develop and execute a plan for procuring HIL computing hardware

  • Design and fabricate the interfaces between the HIL computing equipment and the HIL vehicle subsystems

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand challenges and develop hardware requirements and solutions

  • Contribute to hardware integration with the development of interface documents

  • Support various lab/bench hardware tests with special purpose electronic assemblies

  • Provide technical guidance for projects within the larger program

  • Evaluate risks and contribute to risk mitigation plans to determine if the risks are appropriate and risk mitigation are adequate

  • Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems

  • Travel, as needed, to support projects

  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments

Qualifications:

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering from accredited institution and 2-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Circuit design

  • Digital – up to 100 MHz

  • Analog – audio to 100 kHz

  • FPGA programming, VHDL or Verilog

  • Schematic capture and PCB layout

  • Wiring harness design

  • Electronic test and measurement

  • Communication standards and protocols e.g. RS422, UDP/TCP

  • Source version control tools such as Git, SVN, etc.

  • Serial communications, software test, and computer networking

  • Requirements development, with a focus on interface management

  • Excellent written communication and software documentation skills

  • Ability to communicate technical challenges and provide interface guidance to varied audiences to develop airborne and ground support systems.

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Preferred Experience:

  • Aerospace or automotive industry

  • Altium PCB design software

  • Visio diagramming software

  • Electrometric compatibility analysis

  • Digital flight control system implementation

  • Work management tools such as JIRA

  • Security clearance
