Stratolaunch, LLC Flight Termination System Engineer in Mojave, California

Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise.

Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.

To achieve these efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Flight Termination System Engineer to develop the flight termination system for its hypersonic vehicle.

This position will also lead the efforts to integrate and test the flight termination system in accordance with RCC-313. Additionally, this position will include working with range safety personnel to development flight termination system requirements in accordance with RCC-319. You will also contribute to other RF system designs, test, and integration on the hypersonic vehicle.

You must be comfortable with component/system development and integration. This position will include evaluation of a broad range of technical data.

Candidates must have an aerospace development background and relevant experience in aerospace systems integration.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, implementation and subsystem level testing of the Flight Termination System

  • Contribute to flight test planning for integrated (carrier aircraft + pylon + hypersonic vehicle) Stratolaunch missions

  • Collaborate with range safety personnel to develop flight termination system requirements

  • Contribute to coordination of range testing

  • Support design reviews throughout vehicle development

  • Contribute to other RF system design, test, and integration

  • Analyze technical data for the landing gear design, including subsystem and component designs, system analyses, system margins, test and operations plans

  • Evaluate risks and risk mitigation plans to determine if the risks are appropriate and risk mitigations are adequate

  • Regular and comprehensive communication to the Hypersonic Avionics Lead on a weekly and monthly basis

  • Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems

  • Travel, as needed, to support the department

  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments

Required

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: mechanical design and engineering, structural engineering, electrical engineering, aircraft and/or launch vehicle integration

  • Experience with flight termination receivers, safety systems, power systems, and RF systems and antennas

  • Experience with range and flight safety requirements RCC-313, RCC-319, RCC-321, and RCC-324

  • Experience with aircraft prototype development, including releasing Engineering definition and developing work instructions

  • Knowledge of RF system design including link budgets, antenna design, and antenna placement

  • Experience with technical aerospace leadership, including working with sub-contractors

  • Experience with test planning and execution

  • Experience with risk management

  • Ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to explain rationale and/or resolve concerns

  • Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities

Required Computer Skills

  • Engineering software tools

  • Computer Aided Design tools

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Configuration management systems

Preferred

  • Experience with Autonomous Flight Safety Systems

  • Experience with antenna design and integration for high aero-heating environments

  • Experience with 3D EM software for antenna placement analysis

  • Engineering computing languages (C, C++, Matlab, Simulink, Python)

  • Experience with government agencies

  • Experience with air-launch programs

  • Security clearance

Education/experience/certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 10-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Remarks

  • Travel estimated to be approximately 5+%

  • Position is based in Mojave, CA
