Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.
Stratolaunch needs a Director to lead multiple programs within the Advanced Design Group. This position is the Program Manager for multiple early phase Stratolaunch programs. This position will focus on developing customer offerings based on the Stratolaunch architecture. The offerings are based on existing capabilities and upgrades/modifications/ and/or new designs that meet customer requirements. Candidates must have a strong aerospace conceptual design and program management background, preferably with experience in hypersonic programs. Candidates must also have experience with aerospace vehicle development and test across the speed range from subsonic to hypersonic is highly desired. Finally, candidates must have experience developing new business and providing program and technical leadership to business development efforts.
As a Director, you will lead a small project team dedicated to shaping and implementing the long term Stratolaunch strategic plan. You will lead a group to develop offerings that meet the requirements of a variety of government and commercial customers. You will lead various conceptual design studies that culminate in proposals to the customer. You will be responsible for developing the managing the schedule and budget, while ensuring the technical offering can achieve customer requirements. It is anticipated you will lead multiple efforts to address capabilities desired by different government and commercial customers. Additionally, you will provide leadership for developing efficient customer management practices that enable the company to compete in the hypersonic vehicle market. Your team will be the primary interface with various Stratolaunch customers. Position will also provide program leadership for the Stratolaunch company. This position is based in Mojave, CA.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Program Manager of record, leading the early phase design efforts to develop customer offerings.
Complete budget and schedule management for Stratolaunch early phase design efforts
Contribute to the development of customer offerings that address a variety of customer desired capabilities, including integration of alternate propulsion technologies, use of secondary aircraft, ground launch configurations, and vehicles with increased range and speed
Develop the cost and schedule for the Stratolaunch offerings that leads to follow on contracts for the company
Contribute to the Stratolaunch strategic roadmap, including identifying technologies for investment
Contribute to developing statements of work, establishing program review gates, setting milestones with applicable entry and exit criteria, and evaluating sub-contractor capabilities
Contribute to development of the hypersonic customer base
Develop an understanding of company capabilities and how they align with customer requirements; goal to help prioritize the customers given the company’s constraints
Implement program management tools, as needed, to facilitate proposal development
Develop material for proposals to a variety of internal and external customers
Contribute to the business plan with forecasts of schedule, budget, and personnel
Evaluate risks and mitigation plans to determine adequacy and effectiveness
Regular and comprehensive communication to the Sr. Director, Advanced Development on a weekly and monthly basis
Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems
Travel, as appropriate, to support the company

Experience with high-speed, e.g. supersonic or hypersonic, aerospace systems
Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: large aerospace program management, sub-contracts and procurement, personnel management, aircraft systems, aircraft operations, launch vehicle integration, ground systems
Experience with conceptual design, including developing a lean program while including appropriate margin for the cost and schedule estimates
Experience developing a customer base and responding to customer requirements
Experience working with government and commercial customers
Experience with technical aerospace leadership, including working with sub-contractors
Experience with risk management
Facilitation skills and ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to gain support or resolve concerns
Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals
Complex aerospace system development experience
Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities
Ability to obtain a security clearance at the TS/SCI level.
Launch vehicle and/or aircraft integration experience
Large transport category or military aircraft operations experience
Experience with government agencies (customers and regulatory)
Experience with air-launch programs
Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification
Required computer skills
MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Project management tools
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from accredited institution and 20-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special remarks regarding work environment
Travel estimated to be approximately 25% or less.
Position is based in Southern California.
