Stratolaunch, LLC Carrier Aircraft Deputy Chief Engineer in Mojave, California

Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.

As the Carrier Aircraft Deputy Chief Engineer , you will be responsible for contributing to the technical management of the carrier aircraft through its flight envelope expansion program and preparing for high speed vehicle integration. As the Deputy Chief Engineer , you are responsible for helping to manage the technical and safety performance of the carrier aircraft, based in Mojave, CA. Your duties include helping the Carrier Aircraft Chief Engineer resolve technical challenges, provide technical oversight and approval of Engineering definition, and contribute personnel management. Position will provide program leadership for Stratolaunch. Candidates must have strong operational background, facilities experience, and relevant experience in aircraft systems integration. This position is based in Mojave, CA.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the technical and safety management of the Carrier Aircraft program

  • Resolve technical challenges, as assigned, for the Carrier Aircraft program

  • Provide technical oversight and approval of action resolution, Engineering definition, and test plans

  • Develop a Carrier Aircraft user’s guide for customers

  • Contribute to high speed vehicle integration and launch for the Stratolaunch architecture

  • Implement program management tools, as needed, for to complete their tasking.

  • Contribute to developing statements of work, setting milestones with applicable entry and exit criteria, and evaluating multiple proposals

  • Contribute material to proposals to a variety of internal and external customers

  • Contribute to risk evaluations for Air Launch programs

  • Contribute to obtaining permits and regulatory approval for Air Launch projects

  • Evaluate risks and risk mitigation plans to determine if the risks are appropriate and risk mitigations are adequate

  • Regular and comprehensive communication to the Carrier Aircraft Chief Engineer on a weekly and monthly basis

  • Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems

  • Travel, as needed, to support the company

  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, one or more of these disciplines: large aerospace technical management, structural design, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, sub-contracts and procurement, personnel management, aircraft systems, aircraft operations, rocket vehicle integration, ground systems

  • Experience with flight test

  • Experience with technical aerospace leadership, including working with sub-contractors

  • Experience with risk management

  • Facilitation skills and ability to communicate technical challenges and guidance to varied audiences to gain support or resolve concerns

  • Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals

  • Complex aerospace system development

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities


  • Experience with large transport aircraft

  • Experience with government agencies

  • Experience with air-launch programs

  • Security clearance

Required computer skills

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • MS Project

  • Project management tools

  • CAD software tools, such as CATIA and/or SolidWorks


  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from accredited institution and 7-plus years of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
